This program is available for those who wish to have a cat on
their property to help with rodent control etc., without the use of
deadly, toxic poisons. Cats adopted out under this program are only
those that are very
feral, with virtually no chance of adoption and
are already accustomed to living outdoors. All cats adopted out
under this program will live out a natural existence in a natural
environment. However, they will still be cared for, provided with
food and shelter from the elements, spayed or neutered and receive
proper veterinary care for the rest of
their lives. Many people are
under the mistaken concept that if cats are provided proper food,
they will not still keep down the rodent population. This is false
and has been the subject of much scientific research and a great
television special run by the BBC in England.
Many people are also under the mistaken idea that every cat can be socialized or happy living indoors. Our experience with ferals gives us the understanding that a certain percentage of our animals will never be content living indoors. They have usually lived outdoors their entire life and can become extremely despondent if confined forever in an enclosed setting.
This program also allows people to develop rodent control on
their property, without the deadly poisons routinely used today.
Many times, if a rancher/homeowner can not find a good solution,
they turn immediately to chemicals, which seep into the soil and
can pollute the ground for thousands of years. These chemicals
cause damage to our environment, as well as target animals other
than the rodents, such as hawks, foxes, coyotes and skunks, to name
a few.
So, if the adopter can agree to give the cat proper shelter and food, we in turn microchip the animal and agree to be responsible, should it come down with some serious ailment which necessitates abnormal veterinary expenses.
