Fat Kitty City Humane Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to ending needless suffering, through spaying, neutering, socialization & adoption, and other community-based programs. We currently operate a rare on-of-a-kind no-kill cat sanctuary on a 20-acre tree-studded natural environment where cats can live safely and roam free in Northern California.
History & Future
In October of 1999, Founders Cindy and the late Ed Minghelli started a no-cost feral and stray animal spaying and neutering program to help control the overpopulation crisis in California. Within the first year, nearly 1,000 animals were fixed. Little did they know their program would quickly morph into an adoption center thanks to the gracious opportunity provided by PetSmart Charities, which led to the rehoming of 700 animals in the first 18 months. Through this success, they quickly realized the need for more rehoming opportunities and expanded their adoption programs into various locations.
In 2007 the fruition of the sanctuary came to life. The first and most challenging rescue project fell into their laps when 75 cats and kittens living in an area where their housing was condemned and slated for demolition had nowhere to go. All of them were trapped and relocated to what is now Fat Kitty City Humane Society, but that was just the Sanctuary; quickly named by Founders, Cindy and Ed - FAT KITTY CITY. It was at that point, that the mission was no longer spaying/neutering and ending needless suffering, but to provide permanent housing to the unwanted, feral cats of the community. These cats are often overlooked due to their timid or mislabeled "aggressive" demeanor. The cats that shelters turn away or euthanize upon entry. The ones that are considered nuisances or are only considered barn cats. At Fat Kitty City, these cats were promised a life of great happiness and safety and the spoils that any cat deserves because they are not seen as a feral cat, but as a CAT.
Over the years and now Fat Kitty City Humane Society (FKCHS) has developed into so many other things, it is not only a haven for the unwanted, but a rest stop for the adoptable before their new journey begins. It's also where medical aid is given to those who are in need or whose caregivers and pet parents can't afford it. FKCHS works with surrounding communities to rescue as many abandoned, abused, or neglected animals as funds will allow. Programs have been developed and implemented to connect senior cats with senior people to ensure no person or pet goes unloved during their Golden Years. A community food bank assists pet parents and cat caregivers to help those who help others and funding is used throughout the surrounding Counties to help pets and their owners so they can stay together.
Fat Kitty City Humane Society's commitment to end needless suffering continues and as long as there is a need, there will be "No Cat Left Behind".
