We are seeking a Part-time veterinary assistant who is friendly, compassionate, and loves working with our feline friends. Fat Kitty City Humane Society is a sanctuary and adoption center dedicated to providing life-long care and respite for our kitties in need.
Our guiding principle – is no cat left behind. As a result, we offer low to no-cost spay and neuter services and sometimes emergency vet care to the community. This ability to treat cases in-house has earned FKCHS a large base of loyal volunteers and donors that support our cause. However, we are still a not-for-profit organization and are limited in the resources we have.
Located just 25 miles east of Sacramento in the Sierra Foothills amongst nestled on 20 acres we have a small clinic where we are able to treat our sanctuary cats and care for those in need.

The vet assistant in this position will provide expert care for the cats that come to and live at the sanctuary and will be responsible for their overall health. They will also assist the doctor and clinic days with all of their procedures. Responsibilities:
- Care for pet animals, including administering medications, setting up equipment and diagnostic machines, giving injections, performing tests to assess the state of the animal's health, and other duties as required.
- Administer medications to animals.
- Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures.
- Monitor and care for cats and kittens.
- May Perform lab tests to diagnose ailments.
- Keep detailed medical records on all patients.
- Conduct routine medical procedures such as administering vaccines.
- Helping to maintain a clean and orderly surgical suite per policy standards by cleaning prep areas and maintaining sterility within the suites.
- Help to restock supplies throughout the day to ensure proficiencies and efficiencies
- Learning and maintaining strong knowledge of all instruments and their appropriate care, including cleaning, wrapping, sterilizing and storage.
- Responsible for managing workflow of new patient consultations and post-procedural rechecks. Perform accurate and professional discharging procedures for all post-procedural patients.
- Ability to address any phone calls and emails regarding client questions, concerns, and patient updates. Ordering and Maintaining inventory of medical supplies, instruments, etc.
- Working with the team to complete all shift cleaning and other daily responsibilities throughout the sanctuary in order to maintain cat health.
- Complete weekly roll call.
- Assist foster parents with supplies, vaccines, and spay-neuter scheduling.
- Maintain community veterinary services appointments and scheduling.
- Assist with the treatment of sick and injured cats/kittens.
- Set up housing for incoming cats.
- Assist the doctor with patients, interact with clients, and schedule appointments on the phone and in person.
- Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Speaking directly with clients and other hospital team members, excellent communication skills is valuable and important Ability to work in a team environment by taking direction and assisting other team members Ability to lift, push, and pull 30 lbs. and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Pay is based on experience.
- Veterinary experience: 1 year (Preferred)
